Mary Langston King papers, 1921-1975.

Consisting of general papers, topical files, writings, speeches, class notes, and photographs, re King's education, interests, and travels; papers re her service as a WAC in the Women's Army Auxilliary Corps, 1943-1946; files on the integration of public schools in Florence County, S.C., and elsewhere; various social and professional groups; Winthrop College, Columbia University Teachers' College, and other schools attended; and social and cultural life in Florence, S.C., ca. 1940s-1960s. Scrapbook, 1924-1929, contains clippings, photographs, and postcards documenting Kings' years at Winthrop College; and letters, 1928-1929, from Winthrop College classmates. King's professional career is documented by her writings and speeches; correspondence includes several letters from Jesse T. Anderson, State Superintendent of Education, who in a letter of 7 May 1954 encouraged King to accept the newly created position of state supervisor of special education. Social and cultural life of Florence, S.C., ca. 1940-1960s forms a significant part of the collection; topical files discuss the Cosmos Literary Club, a women's literary society in which King served as president, 1948-1949; flyers, 1954-1960, promoting the Florence Executive Club, which brought speakers of general interest to Florence; the Little Theatre Guild, 1947-1957; items reflecting King's membership in Central Methodist Church; and official reports, 1962-1964, of the School of Nursing at the McLeod Infirmary of Florence, for which King served as a member of the advisory committee.
